"After the Zeitgeist fire" was chosen as a solid example of how well the scene could respond to the arrival of a traveling guest musician - in this case, UK drummer Paul Hession. But it was also chosen for its moment in history: The Zeitgeist Gallery, home to countless improvised music concerts over much of the previous decade, had recently suffered a fire that closed it permanently. Another venue (I forget which one) hosted this performance on short notice. But the end of the Zeitgeist, an incubator for musical research, marked a major turning point in the Boston scene, as the fruits of that developmental period spread out to other cities.

The third in a series of selections from Mike's personal MiniDisc archive, documenting the Boston-area underground improvised music scene at the turn of the 21st century.
